Yellowstone Trail Social Set for June 19!

The Second Annual Yellowstone Trail Social is set for Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19, 2011 from 11 am – 4 pm.  This fun family event features tons of things to do – all free or low-cost!

The Library will again be hosting children’s events and activities with an historic theme.  From gunny-sack races to hopscotch, fishing to a sew-your-own quilt block activitiy, there will be something for everyone.
If you would like to help out with any of these events, please contact us at mjohnson@hammondpubliclibrary.org or call 715-796-2281 – we’d love to have you!

Other events around the community include a Retro Menu and live music at the Hammond Hotel, an antique toy tractor show, a vintage fashion show (feel free to dress in your own 1920s or ’30s attire!) and more.  Look for the yellow posters around town for more details.

And, if you would like to start a new tradition on Father’s Day weekend, you can start with the Yellowstone Trail Race on Saturday, June 18!  The race features both an 8-mile running race from Roberts to Hammond along the Yellowstone Trail and a 5k walk/run to Baldwin and back, also along the Trail.  Find more information, and links to register online, at the race Facebook Page.

Invite a friend to join you for this unique event.  We hope to see you there!

Volunteers Needed: Yellowstone Trail Social

We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help us with the Yellowstone Trail Social on Father’s Day, June 19, from 11-4.

The Library will be a part of the community-wide, family event; we plan to have a variety of low-cost children’s games and activities and will be using them as a fundraiser for the Library.

So far, we have the following activities scheduled for the day:

*  Potato Sack races
*  Three-legged races (need 2 volunteers to run the race area)
*  Fishing Game (Need 2 volunteers)
*  Tossing Game (need 2 volunteers)
*  Quilt block sewing activity (need 2 volunteers)
*  Hopscotch
*  Horseshoes (child friendly) (need 2 volunteers)

We chose these games and activities as they fit the historical timeframe of the 1920s & ’30s, when the Yellowstone Trail was popular.

We also need a couple volunteers to run the prize table and to help with cutting fabric (ahead of time) for the quilt squares.

If you have fabric, thread, needles or pins that you would be willing to donate, please contact the Library ASAP.

If you are able to help that day, please respond to this message via Facebook, or email me at gtlarsen@baldwin-telecom.net or Michelle at mjohnson@hammondpubliclibrary.org.  So far, we have 5 committed volunteers!  If you can only help for a couple of hours, that’s great too – no need to spend all day!

Also, if you have a preference as to what station you are working, please specify when you contact us and we will schedule you there.

I would like to have my volunteers in place by April 30; I will be calling a special meeting to take care of the details sometime in late early June.

Thanks so much for your committment to helping your Library and community!

Yellowstone Trail Event a Success!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We had a fantastic turnout for the first Yellowstone Trail Social in Hammond on Father’s Day!  Several hundred people enjoyed great food, music by the Tin Pan Alley Cats, root beer floats, cars, tractors, children’s activities and more.  We were so pleased the weather cooperated for the event!

Thanks to all of you who volunteered your time and resources to help make this event a success.  The Yellowstone Trail Committee is already planning for next year’s Yellowstone Trail Social – mark your calendars for Father’s Day 2011!

Seriously – Michelle has had to make room for more new items on her shelves, so she has hundreds of kids’ and young adult books, hardcover fiction, audio books, videos and more!  Check out the sneak peek below:

As always, proceeds will go for new items, resources, programs and events at your Library.  Hope to see you here!

Hammond is on the Yellowstone Trail

Did you know that our little Village lies right along the Yellowstone Trail?  What is the Yellowstone Trail, you ask?  The Yellowstone Trail was advertised as “A Good Road from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound” from 1912-1930.

During a time when automobiles were just gaining steam, and Americans were eager to try them out, most roads were still unpaved, muddy and difficult to navigate.  A group of citizens gathered together to promote good roads, along with tourism, across the country, and the Yellowstone Trail was born.

New signs will be put up in Hammond to mark the trail, most notably at the corner of Hwy TT and Hwy 12.  These yellow and black signs are being posted all along the trail to celebrate the history of this momentous undertaking, and to allow everyone to find out more about the Trail.  History buffs across the country are traveling the Trail once again.

This weekend, (May 14-16) Hudson will be celebrating their portion of the Trail with an old-fashioned car show along the dike near the St. Croix River.  Numerous other events are scheduled, as well.

In Hammond, you can enjoy a “Retro Menu” at the Hammond Hotel on Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16, from noon-4 pm, offering old-fashioned meals at retro prices.  Be sure to travel the Yellowstone Trail between Hudson and Hammond!

Hammond will be having our own celebration of our place in history on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 20 from 11 am-4 pm.  Watch for more information and event details.  Currently, we are planning an antique tractor show, car show, historic newspaper display, book sale, community-wide garage sales and more!  Plan to be here for the fun!
