Why Cook Dinner?

During the Heartland Days festivities, there is just no need to cook dinner!  Join us on Wed, Friday and Saturday for low-cost dinners at the Library instead!

Wednesday beginning at 5:30 pm, the Friends of the Library will be hosting a food stand featuring walking tacos, nachos, PB & J sammies, lemonade and water for a low price.   And, ice cream sundaes will be available for dessert!  Come before the Teddy Bear Band begins their show, and treat your family to dinner!

Friday from 6-8 pm also features the Friends Food Stand.  You can also stop by for Waltz Farm Roasted Corn on Friday night – yum!

Saturday, stop by to shop for craft items at the Craft Fair, and visit the Library food stand for lunch.  We will have hot beef, hot pork and sloppy joe plates for a low price, and (as with the Friends food stand) proceeds will benefit the Library!  Waltz Farm corn will also be available during this time.

Sunday, you can enjoy Waltz Farm corn again beginning at 10 am.  And, of course, stay for the Parade on Davis St. later in the afternoon.  The Hammond restaurants will be offering specials and plenty of great food.

Friends Newsletter

We have just published the Friends of the Library Newsletter for the second quarter of 2010.  We have some big changes, as several of the fundraisers normally run by the Friends group have been dropped for this year.  Please take some time to check it out on the Friends bulletin board inside the entrance of the library.  And, feel free to leave comments here if you have any thoughts about current and past fundraising efforts.  We would love to have your ideas and input!

Building Survey

The Village of Hammond is conducting a survey to gauge the thoughts of our residents about the possibility of either remodeling the current building so the upstairs is handicapped accessible and useable year-round, or building a new building somewhere in the village.  The village sent the survey in with the water bills this month, and they are also available at the front desk of the library.  Please take some time today to fill it out and let your voice be heard!

Poetry Reading Planned at the Library

Join us on Monday, May 3, at 6:30 pm for a very special event!  We welcome the First Poet Laureate of Amery, WI, Mr. LaMoine MacLaughlin for a poetry reading from his newly published collection of poems, A Scent of Lilac.  The Friends of the Library will be providing refreshments, and Mr. MacLaughlin’s books will be available for sale and signing.  A little information on the author:

LaMoine MacLaughlin is co-founder and Executive Director of the Northern Lakes Center for the Arts and the Northern Lakes School of the Arts located in Amery, Wisconsin.  The Center has been included in the book, The 100 Best Small Arts Towns in America, and described by the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Arts Board as “ . . . One of Wisconsin’s most vibrant arts organizations.”  An active writer, he is also coordinator of the Northern Lakes Writers’ Guild and editor of The Hometown Gazette, the newspaper serving the Clayton/Amery area.

His earliest memories of his own writing take him back to seventh grade, where several of his poems moved fellow students.  The remainder of his formal education focused upon writing and resulted in undergraduate and graduate degrees.  Mr. MacLaughlin taught English for nearly ten years following graduation.  Mr. MacLaughlin has been very active in larger arts circles as President of the Wisconsin Assembly of Local Arts Agencies, as national co-chair of the rural and small community interest area of Americans for the Arts, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts.

In 1996, he and his wife, Mary Ellen, received the Wisconsin Governor’s Award in Support of the Arts, and in 1999, the Rural Genius Award from the Front Porch Institute.  In 2003, Mr. MacLaughlin was appointed first Poet Laureate of Amery, Wisconsin.  Mr. MacLaughlin is poetry editor of the regional cultural magazine, What’s Playing?, and the Wisconsin Regional Writers’ Association Journal.  He was elected President of the Wisconsin Regional Writers’ Association in September, 2009.  In 2009 his poems were published in the collection, A Scent of Lilac and other poems

Bring a friend!  The reading will be held in the upper level of the library - we hope to see you!
