Cookbooks – What’s Your Favorite?

I admit it – I’m a cookbook junkie!  I love reading through cookbooks of all kinds.  I can actually fool myself into believing that I will cook or bake some of the recipes found inside, too.  Well, once in awhile I have the time to do that.  Here are a couple of my very favorite cookbooks:

Don’t Panic – Dinner’s in the Freezer: Great-Tasting Meals You Can Make Ahead

This book is great for busy moms on the run. Having a meal or 2 in the freezer is so very nice for those nights when your family is running in 10 different directions. There is a second edition, as well, and I cannot WAIT to try the eggroll recipe in that one – they sound fabulous!

Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking
I also love this bread book. I have made the basic white bread recipe more times than I can count, and it turns out amazing everytime. My kids love it, too. There is nothing like crusty, fresh bread with a bowl of steaming soup to warm up a cold winter evening.

What are your favorite cookbooks? Feel free to share them here – I may just find a new favorite!

What Are You Reading?

What is your latest literary conquest?  Share your new favorite books here by leaving a comment.  Perhaps you will inspire someone else to check out a fantastic new book!

I recently read Same Kind of Different as Me, an amazing true story about the unlikely friendship between a homeless black man and a wealthy white art dealer.  Real life is so much stranger than fiction!  This book is interesting, in that the story is told by its two main characters.  One chapter will be written by one man, and the next by his friend.  Since it is written the way each of them speaks, this literary device helps the reader get into the characters even further.  It is so interesting to see the same event through two different sets of eyes!

This is a fairly easy and quick read; nothing terribly complex.  Keep a tissue handy, however!  I highly recommend this book.

What have you read lately??

Book Review: Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Crafts

The minute I saw this book was being released, I SO wanted to see a copy!  Martha has long been a favorite of mine, and I love her style.  An entire book of craft projects, inspiration and ideas - what fun!  Here are my thoughts on the book, having perused it last week.

Title:  Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Crafts

Pages:  416

Suggested price:  $35

This is a fantastic book!  Anyone who loves to craft and needs a little inspiration or know-how, should get themselves a copy of this book.  The book is divided into sections, which makes it easy to find the information you are looking for.  For example, if you would like to know the basics of etching glass, you can find it on page 122.  Or, what about making soap?  You’ll find that on page 318.  Within each section, aside from the basics of a particular technique, you will also find several projects to inspire you.  While browsing through the book, I found several techniques I would like to learn.  Not to mention the inspiration I found for new projects using techniques I already know!

If, however, you would like information on needlework, you won’t find much here.  The crafts covered are mostly papercrafts, glass, jewelry and botanicals – no fiber crafts or sewing.  If knitting, crocheting or quilting are not on your craft wish-list, you will find everything else here.

I think this is a great volume to have on hand for any crafter or artist.  It will serve as a great reference guide for your ongoing projects, and offer new ways of creating gifts – whether for yourself or others!  The price is very reasonable, considering the size and content of the book – it is a beautifully photographed, hard cover book with a dust jacket.  It would look lovely on any bookshelf.  No more searching through past issues of Martha Stewart Living magazine to find that project you saw two years ago; it’s probably in this book.  Martha also offers readers an array of templates to copy, as well as an extensive product sourcing and buying guide for the products she recommends.  Check it out – it will soon be available at your friendly Hammond Library!  Enjoy!
