Food Drive

T. Larsen Design has teamed up with the Library to collect food for the local food shelf.  As we all know, this time of year brings more demand – especially with our economy the way it is!  If you have some spare non-perishable food items in your pantry, consider dropping them by the library!  Cash donations are also accepted; the Food Pantry can make that cash stretch when purchasing food to stock their shelves.

Both the Library and T. Larsen Design are members of the St. Croix Central Area Chamber of Commerce.  The Chamber is hosting the food drive, in an effort to stock the shelves during this holiday season.  Thanks for all your support!  For more information on the Chamber and T. Larsen Design, please visit their websites.  And, don’t forget to check the Hammond Library website for information on upcoming programs!

Friends Gift Sale

The Friends of the Library is hosting a Holiday Gift Sale again this year at the library.  We are offering Chicken Noodle Soup Mix, Creole Seasoning Mix, Chili Mix, cute Hot Cocoa Packets (for just a buck!) and Tortilla Soup Mix – both with and without a Christmas mug!  These items make great gifts for teachers, daycare providers, coworkers, secret Santa recipients – anyone who could use a lift in their day.  They are going fast, so hurry in to get yours!

The Friends group is also offering an on-going Die Cut Sale at the front desk.  Browse the available die-cut shapes, and place your order by filling out the form and bringing your scrapbook paper in.  We will punch the shapes for you, at $.25 each.  What a great way to embellish your cards, scrapbook pages, school projects – anything you can think of!  Stop by the desk to see what we have available.  As always, all proceeds will be used to help out our Library!

What Are You Reading?

What is your latest literary conquest?  Share your new favorite books here by leaving a comment.  Perhaps you will inspire someone else to check out a fantastic new book!

I recently read Same Kind of Different as Me, an amazing true story about the unlikely friendship between a homeless black man and a wealthy white art dealer.  Real life is so much stranger than fiction!  This book is interesting, in that the story is told by its two main characters.  One chapter will be written by one man, and the next by his friend.  Since it is written the way each of them speaks, this literary device helps the reader get into the characters even further.  It is so interesting to see the same event through two different sets of eyes!

This is a fairly easy and quick read; nothing terribly complex.  Keep a tissue handy, however!  I highly recommend this book.

What have you read lately??

Storytime Fun!

Storytime at the Hammond Library is never dull – you just never know what will happen!  This week, our wee visitors were surprised by a visit from some local goats, and their owner, Carol Bodish.  The kids (both the human ones and the goats) had so much fun!  Carol explained about the goats’ hair, horns, what they eat and more.  Be sure to join us next time for a Thanksgiving celebration!  Thanks to Carol for wrangling her goats into the library – that’s not something we see everyday!

Night at the Library a Success!

The Night at the Library event was held on Saturday, October 24, 2009 – and what a great evening!  Over 90 children came through the doors, along with their parents, and 2 dozen grocery bags of donations were delivered to the local Food Shelf!

Everyone had a blast; look for this event next year!  Thanks to everyone who helped set-up, clean-up and plan this great event.  Enjoy the photos, and pass the word that they are posted here for viewing….

Cover Our Kids

The Hammond Library is serving as a drop-off point for this year’s “Cover Our Kids” program.  Bring your new or gently used coats, hats, mittens, scarves, snow pants, snow suits, boots, sweaters or sweatshirts to the Library during regular business hours from now until December 30.  The items collected will be distributed to children in our area who may otherwise go without warm clothing this winter.  Other drop points are Associated Bank and Sandy Brecht Photography, both in Hammond.  Thanks in advance for your donations!

Friends Group

We have been working to make some changes to the Friends of the Library Group.  Since our membership and participation has waned in recent months, we wanted to find out why.  If you are, or were, a member, but no longer participate, would you let us know why you have made that decision?  Is the meeting day or time inconvenient?  No child care?  You don’t like the events planned?  Frustrated by something?  Please, don’t be shy to let us know!  We want to make the changes necessary to grow our group.  You can leave comments here, or drop a note by the library – or contact us via email or phone.

If you live in Hammond, you will soon be receiving information on our newly-formalized Friends Group.  We are looking for new members, to help us with our successful fundraisers we hold throughout the year, and to helps us raise awareness in our community about what the library has to offer.  Check your water bill for a membership application – we’d love to have you!  Last year, we were able to purchase a movie projector for our library; it was used several times for a family Movie Night during the summer.  This year, we will be raising money for a lofty goal – updating the upper level of the library so it can be used year round!  We would love to hold events up there even in the dead of winter – and the heat of summer.  Help us reach our goal!

Our last meeting for this calendar year will be on Monday, November 9, at the library at 6:30 pm.  Please join us as we plan our events for the upcoming year, and set our membership and fundraising goals.  And remember, if you would like to have input on how the group is structured, when and where meetings are held, and more, contact us or come to the next meeting.  Hope to see you there!
