Storytime at the Hammond Library is never dull – you just never know what will happen! This week, our wee visitors were surprised by a visit from some local goats, and their owner, Carol Bodish. The kids (both the human ones and the goats) had so much fun! Carol explained about the goats’ hair, horns, what they eat and more. Be sure to join us next time for a Thanksgiving celebration! Thanks to Carol for wrangling her goats into the library – that’s not something we see everyday!
Night at the Library a Success!
The Night at the Library event was held on Saturday, October 24, 2009 – and what a great evening! Over 90 children came through the doors, along with their parents, and 2 dozen grocery bags of donations were delivered to the local Food Shelf!
Everyone had a blast; look for this event next year! Thanks to everyone who helped set-up, clean-up and plan this great event. Enjoy the photos, and pass the word that they are posted here for viewing….

Cover Our Kids
The Hammond Library is serving as a drop-off point for this year’s “Cover Our Kids” program. Bring your new or gently used coats, hats, mittens, scarves, snow pants, snow suits, boots, sweaters or sweatshirts to the Library during regular business hours from now until December 30. The items collected will be distributed to children in our area who may otherwise go without warm clothing this winter. Other drop points are Associated Bank and Sandy Brecht Photography, both in Hammond. Thanks in advance for your donations!

Friends Group
We have been working to make some changes to the Friends of the Library Group. Since our membership and participation has waned in recent months, we wanted to find out why. If you are, or were, a member, but no longer participate, would you let us know why you have made that decision? Is the meeting day or time inconvenient? No child care? You don’t like the events planned? Frustrated by something? Please, don’t be shy to let us know! We want to make the changes necessary to grow our group. You can leave comments here, or drop a note by the library – or contact us via email or phone.
If you live in Hammond, you will soon be receiving information on our newly-formalized Friends Group. We are looking for new members, to help us with our successful fundraisers we hold throughout the year, and to helps us raise awareness in our community about what the library has to offer. Check your water bill for a membership application – we’d love to have you! Last year, we were able to purchase a movie projector for our library; it was used several times for a family Movie Night during the summer. This year, we will be raising money for a lofty goal – updating the upper level of the library so it can be used year round! We would love to hold events up there even in the dead of winter – and the heat of summer. Help us reach our goal!
Our last meeting for this calendar year will be on Monday, November 9, at the library at 6:30 pm. Please join us as we plan our events for the upcoming year, and set our membership and fundraising goals. And remember, if you would like to have input on how the group is structured, when and where meetings are held, and more, contact us or come to the next meeting. Hope to see you there!
Night at the Library
Farm Fun!
The StoryTime group had a great time this morning at the farm! Stephanie and Dan Horstman were gracious enough to allow us to explore their farm. The children enjoyed holding and petting chickens, ducks, sheep and a pig! Despite chilly temperatures, everyone had a blast. Check out some of the festivities:
Thanks to the Horstman’s for allowing us to visit your farm!
Third Annual Halloween Costume Shop
Please join the Friends of the Library for their Third Annual Halloween Costume Shop on Saturday, October 3, from 8 am – noon. This event will be held in the upper level of the Hammond Library, and all proceeds will benefit library programs and resources. Shop for a costume, mask or accessory for a very reasonable price. We have both adult and children’s costumes available.
New this year is the addition of Children’t Holiday Attire – find your little ones a new Christmas outfit or Easter dress at low prices!
If you have costumes, accessories or children’s formal wear to donate to the sale, they can be brought to the library front desk during regular business hours. Pass the word – we hope to see you all there!
We Want You – as a Friend!
Please join us for our next Friends of the Library meeting on Monday, October 12, at 6:30 at the Hammond Library. This is an excellent time to join our group, if you have been considering doing so! We will be discussing all our events for 2010 – dates, what events we are going to host, fundraising goals and more. We need your feedback, ideas and talents, so please plan to be with us.
If you cannot make the meeting, don’t hesitate to contact us with your thoughts. We are happy to have you as a Friend, if only for one event per year. If we spread the work among many Friends, it hardly seems like work. Our events are really fun to “work” and the community truly enjoys being a part of them. Join us in October to offer your ideas for the upcoming year!
